The Proverbial Lone Wolf Librarian blog will chronicle the solo experience of creating a fully functioning special library from thousands of non-cataloged and unorganized physical items in multiple locations in 2 U.S. states with minimal budgeting. This MLS position requires additional, non-traditional librarian related tasks which, along with major budget constraints, challenges more rapid forward progress. Product development project management duties for which I fortunately have much unique experience has increasingly taken up librarian function time since temporarily assuming these additional Marketing Department responsibilities in March 2007.
At the onset of this blog, over 16,000 physical items have been cataloged using DDC with LCSH over a 2 1/2 year period using a web-based ILS from Book Systems, Inc., Atriuum (BHM OPAC in the “Links” column at right). The ILS was selected and purchased in August 2006 due to cost and IT specification constraints though most libraries/systems that use the software are school districts. Eventually, we may be able to migrate to a more appropriate but costly ILS should an increased perceived value be placed upon this overall project by upper management.
Although I review RSS feeds of other librarian blogs regularly, this is my first experience creating a blog so we’ll see how things progress. This initial post was created without reading the Word Press documentation…. I suppose it’s now time to read more about Word Press… Should things go well, I plan to post every weekday.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it – Omar Khayyam
Any comments are welcome along the way…
