Loan E-Books on the Nook E-Reader with LendMe service…12.16.09

16 12 2009

Excerpted from How to loan ebooks on the nook with LendMe service:

I have now written a few articles on the B&N Nook (see my first impressions and content article 1 and article 2) and continue to test out and discover how capable this ebook reader is…

The basics of the LendMe service is that you can lend supported books ONE time to ONE person for a period up to 14 days. You can loan multiple books to the same person, but each supported book is only able to be lent out by you once. I understand this is a limitation placed on the books by publishers, but at least it is a step in the right direction and maybe we will see this limitation change in the future.

The books are available to the person who received the loaned book for free for up to 14 days and can be returned by the reader earlier if they finish in just a few days or something. To be clear, the owner cannot then lend that book out again to someone else, EVER.

A member of the Barnes & Noble PR team loaned me an ebook and a notification bubble appeared in the lower left of my nook display. I then went to My Library and saw that there was an offer to accept page (see the screenshot in my image gallery). You then use the touch color display to choose Yes, borrow this or No, thank you. If you turn down the loan then the book rights are returned to the owner and they can read the book or try lending it out to someone else. The lend offer is valid for 7 days so the person can decide if they want to read it or not. If 7 days goes by without a response, then the rights are returned to the lender.

After you accept the offer, then the word Download appears on your bottom color display so you can add it to your device. You will then see the book in your library with the words From a friend after the book title. The number of remaining days of the loan also appears so you know how long you have left to read the book.

You can return the book before the 14 day period expires, but currently only through the Barnes & Noble website and not from the nook….”

Library 2.0 Gang Podcast: Social Software in Libraries…12.15.09

15 12 2009

From Library 2.0 Gang 12/9: Social Software in Libraries:

Social Software in Libraries has been a hot topic for many a month.  Like most of the technologies that we discuss on the Library 2.0 Gang, Social Software covers a broad range of individual components, and can mean differing things to different people.

Our guest for this show is Meredith Farkas, Author of the book ‘Social Software in Libraries‘…

The Gang this month consists of John BlybergChar Booth,  Marshall BreedingNicole Engard, and Carl Grant.  After exploring the two main categories of social software, the recommendation/tagging/commenting systems and the Facebook/Twitter/blogging, the gang coalesced  around the notion that it is people that interact socially…”

Librarians – Staying Connected After a Layoff…12.14.09

14 12 2009

Excerpted from Staying Connected After a Layoff:

“In this downturn, whether having lost their jobs because their company downsized, their government positions were RIF’d, or their organizations were overextended and had to make cutbacks, laid-off workers are using new and innovative tools creatively and successfully to stay connected with their former colleagues and to energize their job searches.

In his article in CIO Magazine 1, David Ramel points out that electronic social networking tools allow one to get more targeted more quickly. He also points out:

• The closer you are to the IT industry, the more likely you can take advantage of the newer electronic social networking tools, and

• Younger laid-off workers are much more likely to use the newer electronic social networking tools.

Writers for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, however, warn the newly jobless to be careful with their online presence and their in-person social attributes. Jenna Wortham 2 (NYT) wants her readers to tidy up their Facebook profiles because potential employers are researching applicants’ content for provocative photos, references to drinking and drugs, poor communication skills, and other “alarming” behavior. Christina Binkley 3 (WSJ) learned through interviews with high-level human resources executives that in the aftermath of a layoff, style is critical. She cautions job candidates to: give themselves time to cool off, prepare to present themselves as physically and mentally upbeat, rein in resentment, be careful what they post to the internet, and update their wardrobes…”

This Year Try “A Christmas of Compassion”…12.14.09

14 12 2009

Christmas of Compassion is provided as a free service to the local and global community. Cross Timbers does not retain any of these donation gifts, but simply forwards each gift to the six charity recipients.

This year, Cross Timbers asks, “Instead of giving something to someone this Christmas who doesn’t really need anything, why not give a gift to someone who doesn’t have much of anything, and really make a difference in that person’s life?”

What Do You Get?

When you buy your gift for a friend, family member, co-worker or client, three things happen.

First, you receive a receipt that shows your purchase is a donation to a registered non-profit organization, which you can provide to your tax preparation professional for tax deduction purposes.

Second, we promptly email you a color printable gift card that you can customize and give to that person as a physical symbol of your gift. It’s a fillable PDF, so you can type in your name, their name, and the gift you purchased. Some examples are provided for you below.

Third, the proceeds of your purchase are provided directly to the charity associated with the item you purchased (Proceeds = the amount you paid less PayPal transaction processing fees applied at the time of purchase).

To learn more about Cross Timbers or the six charities participating in Christmas of Compassion, please visit the individual websites listed below. By clicking these links, you are leaving the Christmas of Compassion website and gift program. So if you want to buy a Christmas of Compassion gift, don’t forget to come back here and make your Christmas gift donation!

Reuters reported:

Google Inc plans to sell its own cellphone direct to consumers as soon as next year, bypassing wireless operators in a rare strategic move, the Wall Street Journal cited sources as saying on Saturday.

Called the Nexus One and made by smartphone maker HTC, the phone will run on the search giant’s Android operating system — around which Motorola and other cellphone makers have built devices — and will be sold online, the newspaper cited persons familiar with the matter as saying.

Cellular service will have to be bought separately…”

Do It Yourself Book Scanner…12.12.09

12 12 2009

As Wired reported:

“For nearly two years, Daniel Reetz dreamed of a book scanner that could crunch textbooks and spit out digital files he could then read on his PC.

Book scanners, like the ones Google is using in its Google Books project, run into thousands of dollars, putting them out of the reach of a graduate student like Reetz. But in January, when textbook prices for the semester were listed, Reetz decided he would make a book scanner that would cost a fraction of commercially available products.

So over three days, and for about $300, he lashed together two lights, two Canon Powershot A590 cameras, a few pieces of acrylic and some chunks of wood to create a book scanner that’s fast enough to scan a 400-page book in about 20 minutes. To use it, he simply loads in a book and presses a button, then turns the page and presses the button again. Each press of the button captures two pages, and when he’s done, software on Reetz’s computer converts the book into a PDF file. The Reetz DIY book scanner isn’t automated–you still need to stand by it to turn the pages. But it’s fast and inexpensive.

‘The hardware is ridiculously simple as long as you are not demanding archival quality,’” he says. ‘A dumpster full of building materials, really cheap cameras and outrageous textbook prices was all I needed to do it.’

Reetz went on to upload a 79-step how-to guide for building a book scanner (.pdf)….”

Christmas is About God’s Unfathomable Love…More Than You Can Imagine…12.12.09

12 12 2009

Most librarians will agree that the core philosophy of librarianship is ultimately about liberation and the promotion of freedom through knowledge and truth.

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The truth is that God is love and He loves absolutely everyone even if we can’t understand it.

11 12 2009

From Kindle DX Vs Sony Reader Daily Edition:

“The Sony Reader Daily Edition arrives December 18th, 2009 and we have a new comparison – Kindle DX Vs Sony Reader Daily Edition.
