7 Things You Should Know About the Modern Learning Commons – EDUCAUSE…04.14.11

Title: 7 Things You Should Know About the Modern Learning Commons (ID: ELI7071)

Abstract: The learning commons, sometimes called an “information commons,” has evolved from a combination library and computer lab into a full-service learning, research, and project space. As a place where students can meet, talk, study, and use “borrowed” equipment, the learning commons brings together the functions of libraries, labs, lounges, and seminar areas in a single community gathering place. The cost of a learning commons can be an obstacle, but for institutions that invest in a sophisticated learning commons, the new and expanded partnerships across disciplines facilitate and promote greater levels of collaboration. The commons invites students to devise their own approaches to their work and to transfer what they learn in one course to the work they do for another.

The “7 Things You Should Know About…” series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

In addition to the “7 Things You Should Know About…” briefs, you may find other ELI resources useful in addressing teaching, learning, and technology issues at your institution. To learn more, please visit the ELI Resources page.

Emerging Digital Librarian Roles…04.13.11

13 04 2011

From Emerging Futures of Subject Librarians:

“…Apart from changes in traditional responsibilities, new responsibilities are emerging on the near horizon, such as digital research services, digital user services, digital publication, and data management. For example, the library’s Research Commons envisions consultations of subject librarians with researchers on new or existing digital projects. That role might consist of offering advice on developing a concept, finding grant sources, mapping out technological needs, selecting resources for digitization, or even managing pilot projects. These functions may require librarians to acquire more knowledge of technology, such as basic programming, or enhanced organizational skills in system building…”

Intellectual Honesty: Jesus Christ – Legend, Lunatic, Liar, or Lord and GOD?…04.13.11

13 04 2011

In his famous book Mere ChristianityC.S. Lewis makes this statement: ”A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg–or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us…’”

Jesus could only have been one of four things: a legend, a liar, a lunatic–or Lord and God.

There is so much historical and archeological evidence to support his existence that every reputable historian agrees he was not just a legend.

If he were a liar, why would he die for his claim, when he could easily have avoided such a cruel death with a few choice words?

And, if he were a lunatic, how did he engage in intelligent debates with his opponents or handle the stress of his betrayal and crucifixion while continuing to show a deep love for his antagonists?

He said he was Lord and God.  The evidence supports that claim…”

Who is Jesus…really?

State of American Libraries:

More than two-thirds of adults responding to a January 2011 Harris Poll Quorum (PDF). created for the American Library Association said that the library’s assistance in starting a business or finding a job was important to them. These figures were up from a year earlier, testament both to Americans’ entrepreneurial spirit and libraries’ role in nourishing that spirit.
The ALA conducted the January study as part of a Harris Interactive telephone omnibus study conducted Jan. 19-23 with a nationwide cross-section of 1,012 adults…”
